I have been a freelancing graphic designer and illustrator for 6 years! It's been an exciting time, but going full-time freelance was, and is, a slow-burn process for many creatives in this industry. Today I'm sharing the entire timeline of 10 years—oh man, I'm getting old.
Entered college with a studio arts major. took an intro to graphic design class & was hooked! I changed my major to graphic design
Took a student graphic design job on campus
Got a referral for a super part-time job as a freelance graphic designer at a church (at one point in college I had like 4 part time jobs at one time-how did i have the energy for that???)
December 2017: Graduated with a bachelor’s in graphic design (I also have a minor degree in illustration)
Started freelancing and took a full-time graphic designer job at a printing company
Quit the full-time gig as I was able to collect enough freelance clients to go full-time (For me, that meant making enough steady income per month to cover 50% of living costs shared with my husband! (I also supplemented income with tutoring English to kids for a while.)
Became a mom! totally shifted the way I work. Challenging, but do-able. (One of the perks of freelancing is flexibility of schedule. But that often means working to meet deadlines instead of set hours, which can also be difficult.)
Started to grow a “team” of creatives!
We’re continuing to design and help clients market their business and build their brand!
